Title: Manuscript of popular Persian narratives by an unknown author, with 14 illuminated miniature paintings in color Author: Place: Persia Publisher: Date: Late 18th century Description: 172 leaves, calligraphed in black ink, 13 lines. With 14 color illuminated miniature paintings, about half a page each. 21.5x15 cm (8½x5½"), 19th century full leather with Arabesque tooling, recased with later endpapers. Persian manuscript with striking illuminations, including: two sleeping heroes, who are observed by a djinn (2) (the names of the heroes are not shown in the text); The conversation between Hana and Sham'un regarding the marriage promise of Nazeningul (2); Shirafkan and Hormoz in the audience before the king, Hormoz's enemies form a battle; Zuhregulam was appointed the personal servant of the king; Shirafkan (hanged on the shoulders) is recognized as the son of the ruler of Istanbul; Battle scene between Hormoz, Shirafkan and the masked rider (2); The king engaged four sisters with four royal sons; The forty days of wedding celebrations (2); The king places the crowned head of his son on the throne; At the foot of a hung king, Homoz and Shirafkan attack their enemies. Notes in a contemporary hand on first and last pages. Lot Amendments Condition: Some scuffing and wear to binding; some edge wear and occasional short tears to paper, some soiling, miniature on leaf 161 with paper restoration on verso (without image loss); overall very good.
