MEYER, Henry Leonard. Illustrations of British Birds . London: Longman & Co., [1837-1844]. 4 volumes, 2° (380 x 270mm.). Lithographic titles and list of plates in each volume, and 318 HAND-COLOURED LITHOGRAPHIC PLATES, by Meyer and his wife, Mary Anne Moor. (Occasional surface soiling and spotting.) Original green cloth boards (rebacked with modern dark green morocco, rubbed). Provenance: Richard Beauvoir Berens (bookplate). This is the second issue of the first edition of Meyer's work, although due to the erratic way the original parts were issued, few copies of the book are alike. This copy lacks the plates of the ring pheasant (volume II) and the Gargany teal (volume IV), but has the additional plates of the blackbird and heron, as well as five extra plates of eggs, which have been noted in other copies of the work. Many of the extra plates were added to copies executed for friends of the Meyer family. Mullens and Swann describe the work as "one of our most valuable illustrated works on ornithology." Mullens and Swann p.402-3; Nissen IVB 627; Fine Bird Books p.93. (4)
