Middle East.- Niebuhr (Carsten) Description de l'Arabie, second edition in French, half-title, engraved vignette title, 25 engraved maps and plates, some folding including a large map of the Yemen hand-coloured in outline and 2 folding plates of Arabic scripts with partial-hand-colouring indicating vowel sounds, folding letterpress table, errata and list of plates leaves at end, light offsetting from plates, otherwise very clean, bookplate of Sir Robert Alxr. Chermside, contemporary half calf, old paper label, a little worn, [cf.Atabey 873], 1774; Voyage en Arabie..., 2 vol., first edition in French, half-titles, engraved vignette titles, large folding map of the Yemen hand-coloured in outline, and 122 engraved plates only (of 124, lacking plate 56 in vol.1 and 9 in vol.2), many folding, vol.1 also lacking 2G2 & 3, a few plates stained in vol.1, many loose, contemporary half calf, uncut, worn, covers loose or becoming so, 1776-80, together 3 vol., 4to, Amsterdam, S.J. Baalde, & Utrecht, J. van Schoonhoven ⁂ The first is an account of the Danish expedition to Arabia in 1761-63 on which all but Niebuhr died; the second describes his return journey overland through Persia and Turkey.
