Read more In the distance, an early morning mist still clings to the valleys and peaks of the MacGillicuddy Reeks, with Carrauntwohill towering above this mountainous Kerry landscape. Enlivened by a few bushes and trees, a large expanse of bog extends below the mountains. In the foreground, followed by a girl in a red dress, four geese walk along a bog road. Pecking at the grass, the geese waddle along unconcernedly. However, on closer inspection, it appears the girl has a long knife in one hand, and a dead goose in the other. This theme of the goose girl appears regularly in paintings of rural life in Ireland, and allowed artists to contrast a romantic ideal of life in the country, with the grimmer realities of raising animals to provide food.
