John Darby, 1690, first latin edition of milton's poems, translated by William Hogg, modern olive morocco gilt, all edges gilt, later manuscript shelf-mark and notes on front endpaper (about the use of this work by Lauder: see below); De doctrina Christiana... Cantabrigiae: Typis Academicis, 1825, two leaves of engraved facsimiles of original manuscript [together with:] A Treatise on Christian Doctrine... translated from the original by Charles R. Sumner. Cambridge: University Press, 1825, two leaves of engraved facsimile of original manuscript two volumes bound as one, contemporary russia, some spotting and browning, rebacked retaining original spine, extremities rubbed with some loss; Paradisus Amissus. Poema Joannis Miltoni. Latine Redditum a Guilielmo Dobson. Oxford: Sheldonian Theatre, 1750-53, Latin translation by William Dobson together with English text, 2 volumes, engraved medallion portraits of Milton to title-pages, contemporary mottled calf gilt, slightly bowed, endpapers slightly cockled, extremities worn, splitting to joints with some additional minor loss to spines--Masen, Jacob. Sarcotis. Carmen. Cologne: J. Barbou, 1757 [together with:] La Sarcothée. London: J. Barbou, 1757, 2 volumes in one, contemporary morocco gilt, some minor wear to corners; various sizes (5) Jacob Masen's poem on the origins of humanity was first published, within a volume of collected pieces, in 1664. The central character is Sarcotis: a creation combining Adam and Eve. The poem achieved notoriety in 1747 when William Lauder accused Milton of plagiarism from the poem. Demand for the text produced this volume comprising the Latin original and a French translation (both published by the same publisher), together with a survey of the controversy.
