M.D. LXXXVII Author: Mercator, Rumold Place: [Amsterdam] Publisher: [Jodocus Hondius] Date: 1587-[1609-19] Description: Copper-engraved double-hemisphere map, hand-colored. 28.5x51 cm (11¼x20"). Double hemisphere map of the world, a condensation or Gerard Mercator's great world map of 1569 by his son Rumold, which first appeared in Isaac Casaubon's edition of Strabo's Geographia published in Geneva in 1587. It later appeared in editions of the Mercator Atlas. Shirley describes this map as '' a model of clarity and neatness, with typical cursive flourishes to the lettering of the sea names''. This is a later issue of the map, with cracks in the plate in the title at which, which first occurred around 1603. The plates of the Mercator atlas were sold to Jodocus Hondius in 1604. The French text on verso indicates this to be published 1609, 1613 or 1619 Lot Amendments Condition: Some wear around the edges with sort marginal tears, left margin trimmed to neat line in places, a few neat archival repairs on verso; some toning, minor bleed-through from text on verso; very good.
