He started as an interior designer, drawing inspiration from the work of J. Hofmann, one of his closest collaborators. In 1912 he became a founding member of the Austrian Werkbund and was a core designer of Wiener Werkstätte. He focused on creating a certain mood, attempting to provide buildings with a comprehensive, cohesive appearance – from the architecture to the complete interior furnishings, a “Gesamtkunstwerk” in the spirit of the late Secession and Art Deco.
