Papua New Guinea. Early 20th century. Wood. 134 x 36 cm. With museum label. Like many shields from Papua New Guinea, the esthetic force of the shield is supposed to 'shock' potential enemies of guard by the visual impact. These impressive war shields were emblems of power and used not only to protect during warfare but also for spiritual protection, transferring the power of the ancestors to the shield. Sought after by the enemy, the power and prestige of these shields made them important trophies. (VJ) Provenance: Collected by Georg Höltker between 1936 and 1939 for the Mission Museum, Blönried; Van Bussel, Amsterdam; Important Belgian collection.
