PARKER, Nathan H. and D.H. HUYETT. The Illustrated Miners' Hand-Book and Guide to Pike's Peak, with a New and Reliable Map, Showing all the Routes, and the Gold Regions of Western Kansas and Nebraska . St. Louis, 1859. 12 o (148 x 102 mm). 75 pages, 37 pages advertisements. 6 wood-engraved plates and 2 folding maps, including untitled map of Illinois and the route of the St. Louis, Alton & Chicago Railroad by W.G. Baker, and the large folding map at end "New Map of Pike's Peak Gold Region" after A.M. Bailey by A. Janick & Co. (some minor spotting). Original blind-stamped cloth, gilt-lettered on upper cover (spine somewhat darkened); red quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance : Thomas W. Streeter (bookplate, his sale Parke-Bernet, 23 April 1968, lot 2128, purchased from Edward Eberstadt & Sons, 1958). FIRST EDITION. "This is a fine copy of what seems to be the most informative of the 1859 Pike's Peak guides and the one with the most satisfactory map. The usual extracts of letters giving conditions at the mines are rather brief, but more information is given on all the factors relating to reaching the mines than I have seen elsewhere. Six routes to the mines are indicated by name on the map: Council Bluffs Route, Nebraska City, Republican Fork, Smoky Hill, Sante Fe (by Council Grove) joining the Arkansas Route at Old Fort Atkinson" (Thomas W. Streeter). Graff 3191; Hafen 10; Howes P-82 ("dd"); Streeter IV:2128 (this copy); Wagner-Camp-Becker 339; Wheat Mapping the Transmississippi West 990.
