Title: Pharmacopée Royale Galénique et Chymique [The Royal Pharmacopeia Galenical & Chimical] Author: Charas, Moyse Place: Lyon, France Publisher: Anisson & Posuel Date: 1717 Description: [6], 884, [48], [1 leaf "Explicatiòn des plus communs Caracters Chymiques"] pp. + plates. Illustrated with 6 copper-engraved plates, 5 of which are in the back showing various tools and instruments and the added pictorially engraved title page. 9x6¾, bound in period sheep. "Nouvelle Edition." An early and important work on chemistry and pharmacology, originally published in Paris in 1676. Written by a well known a Parisian apothecary, physician, pharmacologist and chemist of his day, Pharmacopée Royale Galénique et Chymique is Charas' most famous book. Also, Charas attributes the characteristic effects of a snakebite to the animal’s "enraged spirits." Lot Amendments Condition: Edge wear and rubbing to leather, a few white spots; hinges cracking with inner front board lifting, bottom corner of front preliminary leaf missing, a few other leaves with corners folded, slight offsetting to contents, explanation leaf in back loosely laid in, previous owner's signature (circa 1700's); contents still very good; binding needs repair.
