Title: Photograph album with 301 photographs of California and Oregon Author: ** Place: California, et al. Publisher: Date: c.1919 Description: Album containing 301 silver-print photographs, many with inked captions, mounted on card-stock leaves with cloth stubs. Photos range from 2½x2¼" to 7¾x9¾"; most measure 4½x6¼". (Oblong album 3 inches thick) 10¾x15½, black cloth. Incredible California travel photograph album from 1919, with spectacular views of various areas of interest, from across the state, also Oregon and even up to Victoria, British Columbia. A concentration of images from the San Francisco Bay Area, Yosemite, Shasta, Monterey, Los Angeles and San Diego. Starts with shots taken aboard a Southern Pacific passenger train in Northern California and Oregon, including some of the train itself (both in motion and stopped), farms, bridges, tunnels, Mt. Shasta (the mountain and Shasta Springs), the Columbia River, etc. The photographer apparently had a long stop over in the SF Bay Area with nearly 90 photos taken. Photo of the Solano Ferry boat station where the train meets the ferry, one photo captioned “My first glimpse of Frisco” coming into the SF Ferry building. Other San Francisco images include: Ocean Beach (with a long pier that is no longer there), Seal Rocks, “Victory Loan Parade up Market Street” showing many of the old buildings with their business signs, two of WWI “Heroes returning” in a march down Market St., Civic Center with a large crowd of military soldiers, Sutro Baths and Heights, many in Golden Gate Park (with Japanese Tea Gardens, Palace of Fine Arts), Mission Dolores, cable cards and various street lines, residential shots, etc. Also, images from Mt. Tamalpais (train and mountain scenes, Muir Woods), Oakland, Berkeley (including the campus, Greek Theatre, clock tower, etc.), San Jose, and Stanford. Continues down to Monterey, Bakersfield, Santa Barbara, Pasadena, Los Angeles, Venice Beach, and San Diego (down to the border with Mexico). Includes: various Missions, several coast line scenes, the Cypress Tree near Pebble Beach, the home of Robert Louis Stevenson the grounds at Del Monte Hotel, “The first theatre in California – Monterey,” a golf course near Monterey, large crowds on the Venice Beach boardwalk (one with banner dated 1919 and one with sign for “Corina Clear Havana Cigars”), a Pasadena ostrich farm, actors from a film “Soldiers of Fortune,” hotels, etc., etc. Also, with about 49 photos from Yosemite Valley and Big Trees area, showing the various waterfalls, rivers, the V-shape valley, log cabin between big trees, carved out tree “Wawona,” various trails, Glacier Point with two men at the edge of rock overhanging an extremely long drop, and so much more. Lot Amendments Condition: Mild rubbing and edge wear; light wear to photos, some with minor fading; from very good to near fine. Item number: 165962
