PIUS II (Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, 1405-1464, Pope from 1457). Epistola ad Mahumeta . [Cologne: Ulrich Zel, ca. 1469-72]. Half-sheet chancery 4 o (195 x 126 mm). Collation: [1-6 8 7 6] blank, 1/2r text, 7/6v blank). 54 leaves. 27-28 lines. Type: 1:96(110)G. 4-line initial space opening text, left blank. Paragraph marks, capital strokes, and underlining supplied in red. 19th-century purple roan, narrow gilt roll on sides, gilt spine (very slightly scuffed at extremities). Provenance : Duc de La Vallière: pencilled inscription -- Count Dimitri Petrovitch -- Boutourlin, Count Dimitri Petrovitch -- C. V. Le Court: bookplate -- Henry Le Court: bookplate -- Baron Horace de Landau (1824-1903): bookplate, Landau sale, Sotheby's London, 31 October 1949, lot 551 (to Maggs) -- Clifford Rattey: bookplate; collection dispersed by Maggs Bros -- [Parke-Bernet, 15 October 1974, lot 224, to Lathrop Harper] Second edition of Pius II's public letter to Mehmed II, attempting to convert the Turkish ruler to Christianity. It is the second of three closely related, undated editions printed by Zel which share format, collation and number of lines. CIBN has recently identified a supposed fourth edition (Goff P-699) as the second edition with minor variants; the present copy agrees with the British Library copy on 1/2r, line 3 (conpossuit), which is not cited by CIBN. C 39; BMC I, 186 (IA. 2759); CIBN P-391; Voulliéme Köln 962; Goff P-698 (recording only one copy in America, at Princeton).
