PTOLEMAEUS, Claudius (2nd century). Geographia. Venice: Vincenzo Valgrisi, 1562. 3 parts in one volume, 4° (226 x 159mm). 64 double-page engraved maps after Giacomo Gastaldi and others, woodcut printer's device on title-page, numerous woodcut illustrations. (A very few very faint marginal notes to the first few leaves, faint water-stain to lower margin of last few quires, occasional light scattered soiling.) 19th-century half calf, red edges (rubbed). Provenance : Thomas Edward Watson (bookplate; by descent to the present owners). First edition of Josephus Moletius's Latin re-translation of Ptolemy after Bilibald Pirckheimer. Six maps relate to the Americas, in addition to the two modern world maps, and 19 maps relate to Asia. Other maps include South Africa, the Arctic, after the famous Zeno map first published in 1558, and Scandinavia, after Jakob Ziegler 1532.
