PURCHAS, Samuel (1575?-1626). Purchas his Pilgrimes . London: William Stansby for Henry Fetherstone, 1625-1626. 5 volumes, 2° (311 x 208mm). Collation as in Sabin, with vol.III * 6 A 4 (contents) bound in vol.II. 88 engraved maps, of which 7 are double-page or folding on guards, 7 smaller engraved scenes, woodcuts of a zebra, Mexican painting, etc. (Lacks engraved frontispiece as often, sheets of quire Kk reversed in binding, one corner tear with slight loss of shoulder note, a few minor tears without loss, light corner dampstain at end of vol. IV and beginning of vol. V.) Late 18th-century diced russia, triple fillet border on sides, marbled endpapers, marbled edges (joints slightly cracked, some wear to spine ends). First edition of the Pilgrimes (vols. I-IV), and fourth "and best" edition of the Pilgrimage (vol. V), forming a COMPLETE SET OF ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT COLLECTIONS OF VOYAGES AND TRAVELS. It was drawn in part from Hakluyt's unpublished manuscripts, and it includes the first printed map in English showing California as an island. The map, by Elstracke after Henry Briggs, was highly influential, being copied by Speed, Jansson, Sanson, etc. With the uncancelled leaf I:p.65, first state of Mmmm4,5, and the corrected impression of I:p.217.
