R. Crumb Handwritten Letter, 2008 Author: Crumb, Robert Place: Publisher: Date: Description: Original letter hand-written by R. Crumb in pencil on 8.5" x 11" paper. Dated December 13, 2008. Signed "R. Crumb" twice, in printing and in cursive. Excellent condition. Crumb's 21st c. epistolary technique is as follows: his brother-in-law Alex prints out emails addressed to Crumb; the un-tech-savvy Crumb writes his response on paper; Alex transcribes the handwritten letter into email, sends the email to the correspondent and saves the letter. A collector has latterly made an exclusive deal to obtain Crumb's handwritten email drafts; thus, these "email letters" are now essentially off the market. "I hereby grant authorization for you to use artwork by me for a collage-style work of art..." Crumb gets bad-rapped as a cranky misanthrope, not utterly without cause; yet, he has been very generous about allowing artists and small business people the use of his images for limited artistic and commercial purposes, without requiring fees or royalties. In this letter, Crumb grants a Mr. Windisch permission to use his art as the basis for a collage wall mural. The letter is signed in Crumb's lovely cursive, unusual for these missives.
