RALEGH, Walter, Sir (1552-1618) -- R.M. (fl. 1617). Newes of Sr. Walter Rauleigh with The true Description of Guiana Sent from a Gentleman of his Fleet . London: [George Eld for H. Gosson, 1618]. [ Bound with: ] PELLHAM, Edward. God's Power and Providence: Shewed in the Miraculous Preservation and Deliverance of eight Englishman, left by mischance in Green-land Anno 1630 London: R. Y. for John Partridge 1631. [ Bound with: ] COVERTE, Robert. A True and Almost Incredible report of an Englishman, that Travelled by Land through many unknowne Kingdomes, and great Cities. London: N.O. for Thomas Archer 1614. 3 works in one volume, 4° (176 x 124 mm). First work with woodcut portrait of Ralegh on title, woodcut initial and headpieces; second work with folding engraved map; third work in black letter and roman type (first work: inner and bottom margins of title-page renewed, imprint trimmed, a small amount of repair to a few corners; second work: inner and bottom margins of title-page renewed, repair to a few corners, repair to last leaf with some loss to tailpiece, map re-hinged with a few small repairs; third work: without blanks A1, K3 and K4, title-page repaired with large portion supplied in facsimile a very few small repairs, light soiling.) 19th-century red morocco, edges gilt (spine evenly sunned, rubbed). Provenance: F.B. (neat inscription to binder's blank) -- Thomas Edward Watson (bookplate; by descent to the present owners). A COLLECTION OF RARE TRAVEL LITERATURE, consisting of the first edition of Newes of Sr. Walter Rauleigh , the first edition of a rare account of Spitsbergen and survival in the far north, and an account of Captain Coverte's overland voyage to the East Indies. Newes of Sr. Walter Rauleigh was published in London ahead of Ralegh's return from his last voyage. Based on a letter by a strong advocate only identified as R.M., it includes a section on the government of Ralegh's fleet, 'Orders to bee observed by the Commanders of the Fleete'. These 'illustrate with some new light the character and energies of their framer' (Edwards Life of Sir Walter Raleigh , I, p. 600). Two issues are known, both published in 1618, one with and one without a list of ships to the verso of the last leaf. The present copy, without the list, agrees with ESTC's description of the reissue. In God's Power and Providence Pelham, a cast-away gunner's mate, describes survival in the far North, hunting, the whaling industry and the Muscovy Company's activity in Spitsbergen, which for a long time was thought of as part of Greenland. This rare account includes a folding engraved map, surrounded by vignettes showing how to harpoon a breaching whale, how to kill polar bears and walruses, how blubber is boiled, etc. Two states of the dedication leaf are known, one with mention of Sir J. Merick, as the present copy, and without. Penrose described Coverte's voyage to the East Indies as 'one of the best examples of a travel journal that the period produced'. Coverte and his men were among the first Englishmen to arrive at the Cape of Good Hope in July 1608 (Mendelssohn I, p. 388). Their ship foundered off Surat, and the journey to the Great Mogul at Agra continued overland. The first edition was published in London in 1612. R.M.: Brushfield (1908), 130, 133; ESTC S109776; Sabin 67574; STC 17148.3. Pellham: ESTC S114323; European Americana 631/84; JCB 2, p. 237; Sabin 59586; STC 19566. Coverte: ESTCS 124215; Penrose Travel and Discovery in the Renaissance (1952); STC 5896.
