McPherson arrived last night with 15,000 pounds of salt beef, which will provide for the army for six days and adding "I hope such measures will be adopted as will answer our demands after that." Gates, nominally the victor at Saratoga, 1777, had freed his slaves and moved from Virginia to New York with his well-to-do wife. Here, he regrets that he and his wife Mary are unable to attend a social function, for she is "indisposed" and he is "quite an Invalid." -- WILSON, James (1742-1798), Signer (Pennsylvania). Document signed ("James Wilson") as Associate Justice, Supreme Court, countersigned by James Buchanan [1761-1821, father of the 15th President], 22 January 1794. 1 page, folio, small losses at fold intersections neatly mended. Greene has sent his Hogshead tobacco "by the Waggon" to Arnold, remarking "you will see it is Tear[e]d, so that you can Deduct that out after you have Weighed it when you Dispose of the same;" he asks him to dispose of it at the same rate as one Mr. Waite who paid 2s and 4p per pound. -- VROMAN, Peter, Colonel, Continental Army . Good wardate letter in which Vroman reports that he has formed his regiment "into Classes agreeable to [Clinton's] said order;" he requests men be sent to relieve those now in his fort "as the Harvest is near at Hand and those who should be in the fort at that time will not be able to reap their Grain." Clinton, WITH CLINTON'S DRAFT REPLIES on blank leaves of two letters. Johnstown, Fort Paris and Scoharie, 13 June-17 July 1780. Together 11 pages, folio, minor defects. Detailed reports from frontier outpost, on problems with local tories, plans to enlist various Indian tribes for scout duty, reporting the destruction of "another of our Frontier settlements," vowing to "muster a party able to give them a drubbing," and sending a petition for a passport to Canada from some women "whose husbands are gone off to the Enemy." He reports that John Johnson with two thousand men plans to attack Stone Arabia very soon and that a scout discovered "the tracks of about ten Indians which they followed untill they came so near that they Ran off & left a Tom hawk behind." -- BOGERT, Isaac.
