Rolex, Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona, ref. 16523, a bi-metal bracelet watch, no. U607847, circa 1997, automatic chronograph, 31 jewels, cal. 4030, adjusted to 5 positions and temperature, gilt dial, applied luminous pointed baton markers, luminous pointed baton hands, centre chronograph hand, subsidiary dials for constant seconds, 30 minute and 12 hour recording, gold coloured bezel, screw down case back, screw down crown and pushers, on a Rolex Oyster bi-metal bracelet with fold over clasp, case back, dial, movement, crown and clasp signed, diameter 38mm, bracelet 16cm One of the most sought after watches, housing one of the most celebrated movements, the Zenith El Primero, a movement that was brought out of retirement only two years before its use in the Daytona. Although created by Zenith, the movement was extensively reworked by Rolex, with only half of the original Zenith parts retained. The date function was removed and a new, high precision balance and escapement was installed. The El Primero powered Daytona was also the first to feature a sapphire crystal to preserve its good looks. The ref. 16520 series were the last Rolex watches ever to be fitted with an out-sourced movement, lasting in the catalogue until the year 2000.
