ROYAL SILVERSMITH THOMAS HEMING A FINE 18TH CENTURY STERLING SILVER SOUP TUREEN, 1780 the George III period urn and cover in the Neo-Classical style, of oval form with a gadrooned and domed cover with flowerhead finial to the handle, with twin fluted scrolling handles terminating in acanthus leaves, the body with an oval heraldic crest over a lappet cast base, raised on a spreading oval foot, hallmarked to body and cover, TH, London, 1780, engraved with the heraldic crest of Lieutenant-Colonel George John of Heath Hall, Yorkshire (1748–1811), 3420 grams (120 oz) in weight, 42cm wide x 26cm high Good condition. Thomas Heming is most famous for the 'Coronation Service' that he supplied to George III between 1760 and 1763, when he was Principal Goldsmith to the King. Heming was the first working goldsmith to hold this post since the early seventeenth century and the majority of the Coronation Service was made in his workshop. The term 'Coronation Service' has been used for this dining service since the 1820s. A tureen from this service remains in the Royal Collection (TNA LC5/110, f.339) A soup tureen made by Thomas Heming was sold at Christie's, London, Property from descendants of Their Majesties King George V and Queen Mary, 13th December 2019, lot 20, £10,600. Lieutenant-Colonel George John of Heath Hall, Yorkshire, was a Member of Parliament from 1783 to 1807. He was a Lord of the Admiralty, from 1791 to 1794, and a Lord of the Treasury, from 1794 1802. He was Master of the Mint from 1802 to 1804, and a Commissioner of the Board of Trade in 1805. He can be seen in the attached engraving, the furthest figure on the right side.
