Russel (James)] Letters from a Young Painter Abroad to his Friends in England , first edition , 5 engraved plates, 4 folding and with contemporary hand-colouring , some a little stained, engraved bookplate of Sir John Ingilby Bart., W.Russel, 1748; another edition, 2 vol., second edition, 13 engraved plates, 11 folding, one with tear, some spotting and browning, vol.2 with small paper flaw causing hole to N2 and tear to lower margin of R4, 1750, contemporary calf, rubbed, the first rebacked, the second with spines worn at head, joints split, 8vo (3) ⁂ James Russel was an English artist living in Rome from 1740-63 who sought commissions for paintings, dealt in antiquities and acted as a guide to those on the Grand Tour, particularly for the recently excavated Pompeii and Herculaneum.
