The Antiquary , Edinburgh: by James Ballantyne for Archibald Constable and Longman, Hurst, Rees [etc.], 1816. 3 volumes, 12°, half titles, glossary bound at end of volume II (L8 of vol. II with severe though clean tear and paper repair at head, clean tear to E10 of vol. III), contemporary half calf and marbled boards, spines decorated in gilt and blind (extremities rubbed, some joints cracked, but cords holding). Provenance : Mrs Frederick Irby, book label. FIRST EDITION. [ with the same author's :] The Monastery. A romance , Edinburgh: for Longman, Hurst, Rees [etc.], 1820, 3 volumes, 12°, half titles bound in before first leaf of text in each volume (quire D of vol. II severely stained, mainly marginal soiling and staining elsewhere, crushed fly on M2 R of vol. III), contemporary polished calf, gilt and blind decoration (rubbed, joints cracked). Proveance : James Cross, early ownership inscription. FIRST EDITION. [ and the sequel :] The Abbot , Edinburgh: for Longman, Hurst, Rees [etc.], 1820. 3 volumes, 12°, half titles bound in before first leaf of text in each volume, advertisement leaf at end of volume III (stain to H2 of vol. I, hole to margin of O3 in the same vol., severe stains to lower margin of K 1 - 2 in vol. II, margins thumb-soiled, isolated spotting), contemporary polished calf uniform with the previous novel (extremities worn). FIRST EDITION. With 6 other novels by Walter Scott in a total of 20 volumes, a fourth edition of Marmion (Edinburgh, 1808) in attractive contemporary straight-grained green morocco binding, and one other volume of verse by Scott.
