SHAKESPEARE, WILLIAM. The Works...London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1709-1710. 7 vols., 8vo, old polished tan calf gilt, tan and black morocco spine labels, swirled edges and endpapers, some joints and hinges cracked (but cords still strong), other wear, staining to some leaves. THE FIRST OCTAVO EDITION OF SHAKESPEARE (the fifth overall), the first illustrated edition, the first with biographical and critical comments, and the first with a named editor; edited by Nicolas Rowe with a account of Shakespeare's life (the text from the Fourth Folio of 1685); illustrated with engraved copperplates. In importance and interest this edition of Shakespeare ranks only after the Four Folios and the individual quartos. The seventh volume, Poems , issued by Curll and Sanger in 1710, is actually a supplement to the Rowe edition of the plays and is not always present. Sold as a set not subject to return. (7)
