An interesting sixth plate ruby ambrotype of Samuel B. Sigler of Company D., 1st Maryland, Potomac Home Brigade Cavalry, also known as "Cole's Cavalry," in full military dress including cap, cavalry jacket, and sword. Accents including buttons, hat embellishment, shoulder straps, and parts of horse harness highlighted in gold. Housed in half case. Inscription on inside of case reads, "Dear Mother, Hope you delite in Bill's and my likeness. Had to take it out side at Marken's in Frederick as Bill would not go into the parlor. Your son, 2nd Lt. Sam Sigler, Co. "D" Cole's Independent Rangers, 1st MD Potomac Home Brigade Cav." The Potomac Home Brigade Cavalry was organized under the leadership of Henry A. Cole of Frederick, Maryland. Companies A, C, and D were very active in the Civil War, participating in engagements at Hancock, MD, Bloomery Gap, Winchester, Martinsburg, WV, Stephenson's Depot, Winchester, Kernstown, and many others. Companies A, B, C, and D were consolidated to form a battalion in August, 1862, and went on to participate in the siege at Harper's Ferry, the capture of Longstreet's train at Sharpsburg, and other important Union actions. Samuel Sigler was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on August 25, 1863, only a week after being listed as a POW on August 18, 1863 (no location listed). Sigler mustered out about a year and a half later, on December 2, 1864. Condition: Image has a few scratches and some fading, especially to background.
