SLEZER, John (d. 1714). Theatrum Scotiae, containing the Prospects of their Majesties Castles and Palaces: together with ... the most considerable Towns and Colleges . London: John Leake for Abell Swalle, 1693. 2° (406 x 250mm). Title in red and black with engraved arms of Scotland, 57 numbered double-page etched plates after Slezer mounted on guards, 32 engraved coats-of-arms in text. (Title browned and with old repair at outer margin, text lightly browned, some light offsetting of plates, one plate slightly creased near gutter, last two plates laid down, final plate holed in gutter.) Early 19th-century brown morocco gilt, covers panelled with foliate rolls and multiple fillets, spine compartments directly lettered and tooled with rosettes surrounded by scrolling tendrils, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges. Provenance : Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753, signature at head of title) -- British Museum (two stamps on title verso, one an 1831 duplicate sale stamp, further stamp on blank verso of final leaf). FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST BOOK WITH TOWN PROSPECTS PUBLISHED IN BRITAIN. John Slezer a native of Holland, settled in Scotland in 1669, and combined the professional duties of an artillery officer with the ambition of delineating the towns and great buildings of Scotland. Among the artists who worked on the plates were Johannes van den Aveele Jan Wyck (who added the figures), and Robert White Two editions were published in 1693 and there were four more editions in the 18th century, the first in 1710. Hans Sloane would have taken a particular interest in the work since his father, Alexander Sloane, was Scottish. Lowndes 2413; Wing S-3993.
