decorated manuscript on vellum . [late 18th century]. Magic scroll written in Amharic. (1720 x 87 mm), 3 membranes, single column of text in red and black ink in a neat hand. Three talismanic drawings of an abstract grid with faces and plant motif on the infill, a guardian angel and a variation on the eight-pointed star with central face. Script preserved in a case made from a large snake, loops of snake at the top hold a throng for tying around the neck so it can be worn. a handwritten amulet scroll of prayers for protection against the ‘evil eye’, still birth, smallpox and snakebites . Magic scrolls are traditionally made of three strips of vellum the length of the owner. [With:] Book of Psalms. ethiopian manuscript in vellum, in Ge’ez. [19th Century]. 4to (193 x 184mm). 158 leaves: 1-15 (in 10s); 16 (in 8s, last leaf cut with loss of text); approximately 20 lines written in a regular hand in black ink, headings in red. A later drawing of the Virgin and Child on a front blank and additional blank with text are loose, wide margins with visible prickings on outer margins. Stitched with a thick wooden board covers, front board broken with loss. [With:] ethiopian manuscript in vellum, in Ge’ez. [19th Century]. 8vo (180 x 97mm). 39 leaves: 1(in 2s); 2-6 (in 8s). Column of text written in red and black ink on both sides leaves, wide margins with visible prickings on outer margins. Stitched with thick wooden board covers. Condition: some areas rubbed, vellum darkened and slight staining and thumbsoiling mainly in margins; boards lightly rubbed.
