STRAND, Paul (1890-1976). Photographs of Mexico. New York: Virginia Stevens, 1940.
STRAND, Paul (1890-1976). Photographs of Mexico. New York: Virginia Stevens, 1940. 2 o (403 x 318 mm sheet size, 162 x 127 mm to 257 x 203 mm print size). 20 hand-pulled photogravures mounted on B.F.K. Rives paper, each numbered sequentially in green ink on the verso. Text by Leo Hurwitz, list of plates. (A few margins of mounts with minor darkening or slight staining.) Original wrappers and heavy cloth portfolio (darkening to sides of wrappers and to edges of portfolio). FIRST EDITION LIMITED ISSUE, one of 250 copies, signed by Paul Strand and each plate numbered in Strand's characteristic green ink. Strand oversaw the production of this portfolio, published by his wife Virginia Stevens, very carefully and notes "that these hand gravures mark a step forward in the art of reproduction processes. Without the close cooperation of Mr. Charles Furth of the Photogravure and Color Company and his staff of skilled craftsmen, the approximation of these reproductions to the qualities of my original prints, could not have been achieved." See: Greenough, Paul Strand An American Vision, pls. 89, 93, 97-99.
