(4to) 26.2x19 cm (10¼x7¾"), period calf, spine tooled in gilt, raised bands, morocco lettering pieces, marbled endpapers. First Edition. Jacques Cassini (1677-1756), was born at the Paris observatory where his father Giovanni was in charge, and succeeded the latter upon his death in 1712. Giovanni had discovered four Saturnian satellites and the division in Saturn's ring; the new knowledge thus gained is put to practical use in the son's work. Large engraved bookplate of Luton Library on front pastedown, along with label of Paris bookseller Mme. Ve. Courcier. Lot Amendments Condition: Some rubbing and wear to covers, joints cracked, spine ends and corners worn; very good condition. Item number: 287929
