"take some panes in examination" - Essex, Robert Devereux 3rd Earl of. Brief m. U. "Ro. Essex", Adresse und Siegel. 1 S. Doppelblatt. Folio. Draiton 10.I. (ca. 1620). Seltenes Zeugnis aus der Zeit Shakespears in dem entsprechenden Idiom. Der Vater des Robert Devereux war der zweite Earl of Essex, Favorit der Königin Elisabeth I., der 1601 hingerichtet worden war. Die Geschäfte übernahm damit der dritte Earl of Essex. An "my loving friend and cosin Walter Bayott Esquire these", den er bittet, zwei Wilddiebe festzusetzen, während er abwesend sei: "I have receaved a letter which I send with this with complanes of two stealers knowne by him; and because my selfe am going from these p(ar)tes, I praie you that you take some panes in examination of them and to committ them or otherwise bynd them ower as you shall in your iudgement see cause; that thereby a pleasing service maie be done unto this matre and the game maie be better preserved for tyme to come. And so committing you to gods good keping, I rest, your loving fried and kinsman, Ro. Essex." – Mit Ausriss bei der Siegelstelle. Etwas tintenfleckig; im Falz geklebt.
