Title: Taking Possession of Monterey. Message from the President of the United States, in reply to the resolution... calling for information in relation to the taking possession of Monterey by Commodore Thomas Ap Catesby Jones Author: Place: Washington, D.C. Publisher: Date: 1843 Description: 117 pp. 22.2x14.5 cm (8¾x5¾"), modern plain wrappers. 27th Congress, 3d Session, House Doc. No. 166. Correspondence and reports with regard to the 1842 occupation of Monterey, California, then in Mexican territory, by the commander of an American squadron in the Pacific, Commodore Thomas ap Catesby Jones, upon hearing a report that war had broken out between the United States and Mexico. When the report proved to be false, he withdrew and apologized. But his act revealed the temper of American naval policy in the Pacific. The action was apparently unauthorized, but it did suggest the extent to which some Americans were spoiling for a fight with Mexico, hoping to open up a vast domain south and west for American expansion. Howes says this document is "said to have been suppressed." Howes M740aa. Cowan 317. Lot Amendments Condition: A little darkening to the text, very good. Item number: 275242
