The Fine Collection of Dress Miniatures formed by the late Derek Robinson The mounted group of five miniature dress medals attributed to Major J. G. O. Aplin, Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, Order of St. Michael & St. George, gold and enamel,straight bar suspension, with gold buckle on ribbon; Ashanti Star; East & West Africa, 1 clasp, 1897-98; Ashanti 1900, no clasp; Africa General Service, 1 clasp, Aro 1901-1902, mounted as worn, slight contact marks, good very fine (5) £140-180 Footnote See Colour Plate VIII. Major John George Orlebar Aplin was the son of Major-General J. G. R. Aplin (see lot 988). An officer of the 3rd battalion D.C.L.I. he was employed by the West African Frontier Force. Late Inspector-General of Lagos Hausas, he served in West Africa 1897-98 and was mentioned in despatches, in the Ashanti War 1900 where he was slightly wounded and in S. Nigeria 1901-02. He was created a C.M.G. in 1899. He retired from the Army in 1904 and died in 1915.
