Place: London Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton Date: 1889 Description: xii, 570 pp. Illustrated with 24 plates, including 1 tipped-in decorative Japanese leather plate, 3 lacquered example plates (including frontispiece), 3 are Japanese woodcuts on thin bast-paper, 2 mounted phototypes, and others that are in color (some are tipped-in); plus 3 folding maps at rear and 20 wood engravings within the text. 9¾x6¾, original decorative cloth recently rebacked, front cover with 2 gilt-stamped cranes in flight & lettered in gilt over color patterns. First Edition. One of the earliest works dealing with the Japanese art industry, and in particular lacquer and how it is manufactured. Nicely illustrated with various types of plates. Lot Amendments Condition: Small rubs, corners a bit bumped; hinges at endpapers expertly repaired, occasional minor foxing; still very good. Scarce. Item number: 188280
