THE JOHN TOWNSEND PAIR OF CHIPPENDALE CARVED MAHOGANY SIDE CHAIRS ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN TOWNSEND (1733-1809), NEWPORT, 1760-1790 both chairs with their original slip-seat frames, each with T hand-inscribed in ink, and WPB hand-inscribed in graphite on inside of rear rail; one chair with frame marked III , slip-seat frame marked III and Bullock hand-inscribed in graphite on slip-seat frame; the other chair with frame marked X , slip-seat frame marked X 37 ½ in. high Provenance John Townsend (1733–1809), Newport Solomon Townsend (1776–1821), Newport and Providence or possibly Mary (Townsend) Brinley (1769-1856), Newport, children of above William Peckham Bullock (1805-1862) and his wife, Phila Feke Townsend (1812–1866), Providence, she the daughter and niece respectively of above Rhoda Peckham Bullock (1852–1940), Providence, daughter William Bullock Waterman, Jr. (1889–1959), Providence, nephew William Bullock Waterman III (1918–2000), West Hartford and Simsbury, Connecticut, son Richard William Waterman (b. 1961), son and current owner
