Lot of 2. Printed Broadside, approx. 15 x 21.5 in., with banner headlines that read "Proclamation, By Andrew Jackson President of the United States," stating the President's words on the Nullification Crisis with South Carolina. Lowell, MA: The Lowell Mercury, Telegraph, and Compend., December 14, 1832. This broadside contains the entirety of President Andrew Jackson's Proclamation to the people of the United States regarding the US Federal Government and its Nullification Crisis with South Carolina. Within the Proclamation, Jackson says that South Carolina's actions are "incompatible with the existence of the Union, contradicted expressly by its spirit, inconsistent with every principle on which it was founded, and destructive of the great object for which it was formed." These words were meant to calm the tensions around the Nullification Crisis. The Nullification Crisis was a political crisis that occurred in South Carolina in 1832. It was the clash between the US Federal Government and the state of South Carolina over the Tariffs of 1828 and 1832. South Carolina's government believed that these tariffs were unconstitutional and did not pertain to their state. President Jackson gained the authorization to mobilize federal troops to regain order. New negotiations were formed and the Compromise Tariff of 1833 was created. The Nullification Crisis was a precursor to the secession of South Carolina in 1860 and the onset of the Civil War in 1861. Accompanied by the regular issue of the Lowell Weekly Compend. Lowell, MA: December 13, 1832. Vol. 1, No. 43. 4pp. 14 x 19.5 in. Condition: Folds in proclamation, with some short tears and folds along edges. Some light spotting/staining. Complete newspaper fully separated at vertical fold, with some light wear along edges.
