THE TYRANNY OF A TEACHER IS BETTER THAN THE LOVE OF A FATHER SIGNED BY MAHMUD MUZAHHIB, BUKHARA, CIRCA 1560 From the Gulistan of Shaykh Muslih al-Din Sa'di, gouache heightened with gold on paper, students and their teachers are depicted at school, some of the students receiving punishments and others making mischief, an elegantly illuminated pavilion stands beyond then with a benedictory inscription in muhaqqaq beneath the dome, signed ' amal-i mahmud muzahhib on a pot to the centre, 2ll. of black elegant nasta'liq above two columns, reverse with 12ll. of nasta'liq , heading in gold, the coloured margins decorated with gold scrolling arabesques Painting 10½ x 6½in. (26.5 x 16.2cm.); folio 14 x 9in. (35.6 x 23cm.)
