Title: The Writings of Henry David Thoreau Author: Thoreau, Henry David Place: Boston and New York Publisher: Houghton, Mifflin Date: 1906 Description: 20 volumes. Illustrated with photo-engraved plates on japon paper. 8½x5½, half green morocco, spines gilt-lettered in raised bands, top edge gilt, other edges uncut. No. 361 of 600 copies of the Manuscript Edition, signed by the publishing company. With an original leaf of Thoreau's manuscript in Vol. I, full page, inlaid to size, folding. It begins: "...head were neatly ----, and the timber cased, with wood unpainted the pillows were checkered & tassled, and the usual long pointed red woolen or worsted night cap was placed on each. I pulled mine out to see how it was made. It was in the form of a double cone, one end tucked into the other... When we landed at Quebec [the next morrow] a man lay on his back on the wharf, apparently dying, in the middle of a crowd and directly in the path of the horses..." With manuscript corrections and small insertions in pencil. Lot Amendments Condition: Perhaps a touch of sunning to spine, else fine, an important set of Thoreau's works, elegantly bound.
