The Wonder Book.
Chicago and New York: Reilly & Lee Co., [1929]. 217 pp. 8vo (258 x 185 mm). Illustrated by Wiliam Donahey and others. Publisher’s brown cloth, pictorial label. Condition : pictorial label rubbed, some soiling of covers. Provenance : Fred M. Meyer Collection. first edition of this rare thompson title . An omnibus of poems, stories and other material, much of it originally appearing on “The Children’s Page” that Thompson edited for the Philadelphia Public Ledger , Summer 1914-Spring 1921. It includes a poem about Handy Mandy who later appeared in the 1937 Oz Book. Thompson dedicated the book to “Marge” (Marge Henderson Buell, 1904-1993), whom she discovered when she was editing the Sunday page. Buell later created “Little Lulu.” William Donahey (1883-1970) created the popular Sunday comic “Teenie Weenies” for The Chicago Tribune . Reilly & Lee, the publishers of the Oz Books, issued the book right after The Crash and it sold poorly. Consequently it is one of the rarest of Thompson titles.
