Both associated with the 1st Walker Cup Match 1922 to include one dated 20 August 1920 inscribed 'To Roger Wethered, A souvenir of a dinner given to Robert A Gardner, Lord Charles Hope, Cyril Tolley, Roger Wethered By the National Golf Links of America' together with Roger Wethered's own unique presentation goblet, a memento from the 1922 Walker Cup Match, inscribed 'British American International Team Match 1922, Souvenir from National Golf Links of America, To Mr Roger H. Wethered'. Both goblets have the National Golf Links of America raised emblem featuring an eagle. Both clearly hall marked 'Tiffany & Co Sterling Silver'. Height 5 inches and weight 8½ ozs The Walker Cup Match followed on from the success of two international matches held between the United States and Canada in 1919 and 1920. During a Rules' meeting in 1920 in the USA between representatives from the USGA and the R & A, a British American International Team Match was also discussed. The USGA President George Herbert Walker was a member of the National Golf Links of America in Southampton, New York. The Club commissioned the goblets and it is believed that the 1920 goblet was a memento of a discussion meeting held over dinner at around the time of the US Amateur Championship. On 23 September 1920 at Manchester Vermont, Cyril Tolley (The Amateur Champion) and Roger Wethered (Chairman of the Oxford University Golf Team) defeated Lord Charles Hope (winner of the 1913 French Amateur Championship) and Reginald M. Lewis at the Ekwanok Country Club in an exhibition match. Later George Herbert Walker drew up a plan and offered to donate a trophy, which became known as the Walker Cup. In 1921, the USGA invited all golfing nations to send teams to compete for the Cup, but no country was able to accept that year. However William C. Fownes (1910 U.S. Amateur Champion and later president of the USGA 1926-1927) who had twice assembled the amateur teams that played against Canada took an American team to Hoylake in England in the spring of 1921. In an informal match the day before the Amateur Championship, the American team defeated a British team, 9 and 3. Early in 1922, the R&A announced that it would send a team to compete for the Walker Cup at the National Golf Links of America. Robert Harris captained the British side that comprised Cyril Tolley (played 1922, 1923, 1924, 1926, 1930 and 1934), Roger Wethered (1921 Open Championship runner-up and 1923 Amateur Champion), Colin Aylmer, C.V.L. Hooman, W.B. Torrance, John Caven and W. Willis Mackenzie. Fownes was the American captain for the inaugural match and his team consisted of Charles Evans Jr., Robert Gardner (U.S. Amateur Champion and who was to Captain the USA Walker Cup team 3 times in the 1920s), Jesse Guilford, Robert T. Jones Jr., Max Marston, Francis Ouimet and Jess Sweetser. The US team won 8 points to 4. The National Golf Links of America is a prestigious links style golf course in Southampton New York, located on Long Island between Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and Peconic Bay. When it opened in 1911, the course was called the National Golf Links of America because its 67 founding members resided in various parts of the United States. The National Golf Links of America will be hosting the 2013 Walker Cup Matches.
