Title: The Game of Pallone Author: Fisher, Anthony L. Place: London Publisher: Bell and Daldy Date: 1865 Description: viii, 47, [1] pp. + plates. Illustrated with an albumen sepia-tone photograph showing a group of Pallone players in uniform (as frontispiece, mounted); 12 wood-engraved plates; plus a few figure drawings. 10¼x7, original red cloth, lettered in gilt. First Edition. The early and popular sport started in Italy, which is similar to the game of cricket, with its first official regulations dating back to 1555. Balls are struck back and forth with a wooden cylinder, called a bracciale, worn over the forearm. If carelessly played, a broken arm can result. The 1991 film, Where Angels Fear to Tread (based on a novel by E.M. Forster), includes a depiction of the game. Printed leaf taken from the Foreign Correspondent of “The Daily Telegraph” July, 1865 regarding the game of Pallone, tipped-in on front free endpaper, perhaps done so by the publisher. Rare, with no copies listed in auction records. Just three copies located in the RLG Union Catalog (one each at New York Public, Yale and Cambridge University libraries). Lot Amendments Condition: Darkening, soiling, splits to joints, ends and corners bumped, dampstaining to top corner affecting contents along top margins; light foxing, an inked note on page 29; else good or better.
