Title: Travels In The Interior of America, in the Years 1809, 1810, and 1811; Including a Description of Upper Louisiana, Together with the States of Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee, with the Illinois and Western Territories, and containing Remarks and Observations Useful to Persons Emigrating to Those Countries Author: Bradbury, John Place: London Publisher: Published by Sherwood, Neely, and Jones Date: 1819 Description: xiv, [17], 346 pp. Folding engraved map. 22.5x13 cm. (9x5½"), modern boards replicating those of the period, paper spine label, page edges untrimmed. Second Edition. This second edition was the first to contain the map, it not being issued in the 1817 first edition. The map, "A Map of the United States of America; comprehending the Western Territory with the course of the Missouri" (30.4x40.5 cm), is described by Wagner-Camp as being "after one of Melish's." It is characterized by Wheat as "pleasing though extending only to the Missouri headwaters... it is on a small scale and has practically no place names west of about the 100th Meridian." Interested in botany, Bradbury came to America and spent much time in the St. Louis area. Accompanied by another English botanist, Thomas Nuttall, he joined Wilson Hunt's party on the first leg of the journey up the Missouri, stopping near the Mandan villages. He met John Coulter at the beginning of the trip and relates Coulter's escape from the Blackfoot Indians. On the Mississippi below St Louis he experienced the New Madrid earthquake and describes the effects in detail. Provenance: Holmes, 9/79 References: Howes B-695; W-C 14:2, CS-G 384 Lot Amendments Condition: Slight darkening to untrimmed pate edges, mild foxing/darkening within, map with a bit of foxing and offset, short stub tear, very good or better.
