Two photographs taken by photographer Yehuda Eisenstark (1912-2005), native of Lvov. In the 1940s, he worked as a journalist and an independent photographer for newspapers in Israel and abroad. He was a member of the Haganah and after the State of Israel was established, he filled several positions in the Israel Defense Forces, amongst them a photographer and a contact officer. During 1947-1948, he took many photographs of Jerusalem under siege. His collection of photographs were purchased by the State’s archive and the IDF archive in 1984. 1. A convoy of fuel wagons standing outside of the Yeshurun Synagogue (on King George St.) in Jerusalem, during the siege on the city. 22X29.5 cm. 2. The destruction of the commercial center (general view) in the Mamilla neighborhood; the place was attacked on December 2, 1947 and was the first large action by the Arabs as a reaction to the Partition Plan. 24X28.5 cm. Both photographs are in good condition. Both are not signed, but a typewritten note with a description of the photograph and the name of the photographer is attached to the photographs.
