Second American Edition. Philadelphia edition of the account of the first white men to cross the American continent north of Mexico, important not only for the geographic knowledge attained but also for the revealing ethnological studies of the inhabitants encountered. Preceded by the London edition published in 1801, a reprint, and a Paris and New York edition in 1802. Wagner-Camp notes that copies of the Philadelphia edition exist bound in 2 volumes and with 3 maps. The map in the present volume is identical to map 3 of the first London edition "A Map of America . . ." Howes M133; Sabin 43415; Smith 6384; Wagner-Camp 1:5. Lot Amendments Condition: Boards a bit rubbed; foxing to endpapers; old ink stamp of New Jersey Historical Society on a few pages; old ink additions to Chippewa language word list, a very good copy with well-preserved map with repair to 1 fold.
