Corners of binding bumped, joints rubbed but sound, internally some scattered foxing, but overall a clean copy . First edition of this important work on the flora of Brazil, which described many hitherto unrecorded species. Wawra, a ship's surgeon, accompanied Maximilian I to Brazil in 1859-60; the plants were collected for the expedition by the botanist and royal gardener Franz Maly. Maximilian I was subsequently self-appointed as Emperor of Mexico (at the invitation of Napoleon III) between 1864 and 1866, but was deposed and executed by the forces of the Republic of Mexico.
