(8vo) 24.7x16.5 cm (9¾x6½"), original morocco-backed boards, spine lettered in gilt, decorations in blind; fore edge uncut. Volume I in the Calafia Series from the press; described by Wagner-Camp as "a sumptuous volume," and noting that "Camp called the Bryant work `one of the most detailed and reliable of all the overland journals' and rated it with Clayton's and Schmolder's books as the three competent guides to be published in 1848. Moreover, Bryant's narrative is of further interest because of its description of the life and times of American Californians before the discovery of gold...."
