The Royal Society authorization leaf and the title remargined, some soiling to binding, generally a sound copy. A work of exceptional interest by John Wilkins, the Bishop of Chester, who was one of the early members of the Royal Society, and a close friend of Boyle, Wren and Evelyn. This Essay is considered his most important work, in which he was assisted by John Ray (who worked on the extensive chapter on botanical classification, pp. 62-120) and Francis Willoughby, on the classes of animals. Two issues exist, as noted by Alston VII, 290; the inferior issue does not have all the plates and tables present here. The index An alphabetical dictionary, wherein all English words according to their various significations, which has its own separate title page, was by Doctor William Lloyd. Though intended as an index, it has much of the character of a dictionary.
