Read more William Edward Norton Lot 66 - 'Kelp Gathering (c.1880)' Estimate: €8,000 - €12,000 Depicting horse-drawn carts on a beach at low tide, with men gathering up seaweed, this canvas, by the New England maritime painter William Edward Norton, dates probably from the 1870's. Although Realist, it is atmospheric and conveys well the silvery light of the seashore on a cloudy day. Norton painted several scenes of kelp gathering, both in oil on canvas and also in watercolour. Another painting by him, The Last Load, shows a heavily-laden cart being hauled along a sandy track. Born in 1843 in Boston, William Edward Norton came from a family of ship builders and during his childhood became familiar with the sea and sailing ships. After a period as a naval cadet, he studied at both Harvard Medical School and the Lowell Institute. At Lowell, he developed an interest in art and began studying with George Inness, whose own poetic style influenced the young artist. In the 1870's, Norton went to Paris, where he studied with Louis Jacquesson de la Chevreuse and Antoine Vollon. He and his wife then settled in London, where he became known for his marine paintings, of coastal areas and the river Thames. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and also received an honorary mention at the 1895 Paris Salon. In 1901 he returned to the United States, settling in New York City, where he continued to paint, making many painting excursions to Monhegan Island in Maine. He died in New York in 1916.
