WOODWARD, William R. Cherished Portraits of Thoroughbred Horses from the Collection of William Woodward . With notes by Walter Spencer Vosburgh and preface by Woodward. [New York]: 'privately printed' by Eugene V. Connett at The Derrydale Press for Ernest R. Gee, 1929. 2° (320 x 246mm). 68 hand-coloured heliogravure plates, retaining original tissue guards. Original red crushed morocco gilt by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, boards with borders of a gilt fillet and a broken line, gilt-ruled turn-ins, titled in gilt on the upper board, spine gilt in compartments and lettered in one, top edge gilt, others uncut, silk marker (a few very light scuff-marks, corners very lightly bumped); original card box (a little worn on extremities). Provenance : presentation inscription from Woodward on front flyleaf. FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY WOODWARD, ONE OF 20 COPIES WITH HAND-COLOURED PLATES, from the edition of 300 on japanese vellum. Cherished Portraits of Thoroughbred Horses reproduces 68 paintings in the collection of Woodward, by J.N. Sartorius, George Stubbs J.F. Herring, Sr and Harry Hall Although A Decade of American Sporting Books & Prints states that 21 of the 300 copies printed were coloured, the Mellon copy contains an autograph note by Woodward stating that 'There are only 20 colored copies'. COLOURED COPIES ARE RARE AT AUCTION, and only two copies can be traced in Anglo-American book auction records since the work was published (the Charles C. Auchincloss and P.A.B. Widener III copies).
