Austen, Jane (1775-1817) Rare Set of Five First Edition Works. Sixteen duodecimo volumes bound in full tan calf with red morocco title panels and gilt spine decoration, marbled endpapers including Sense and Sensibility, 3 vols., London: T. Edgerton, 1811, with half-title pages (vol. 1 endpapers, half-title, title page and pages 1-6 detached, but present); Pride and Prejudice, 3 vols., London: Printed for T. Egerton, 1813, with half-title pages, vol. 1 printed by C. Roworth, but with G. Sidney half-title page bound in from an early printing, vols. 2 & 3 printed by G. Sidney with proper half-title pages (vol.1 half-title nearly detached, vol. 2 half-title and title pages detached, but present, vol. 3 one blank leaf, half-title, title page and first page of text detached, but present); Mansfield Park, 3 vols., London: Printed for T. Edgerton, 1814, with half-title pages (vol. 1 two blank leaves, half-title, title page and pages 1-4 detached but present, vol. 2 & 3 half-titles detached, but present); Emma, 3 vols., London: Printed for John Murray 1806, lacking half-title pages, vol. 1 with dedication page (vol. 1 two front blank pages nearly dethaced, title page detatched, but present, vol. 2 two front blank pages detached, but present, vol. 3 two front blank pages, dedication page and title pages detached, but present); and Northanger Abbey: and Persuasion, 4 vols., London: John Murray 1818, lacking half-title pages, vol. 1 lacking advertising leaf, (all fifteen volumes generally have wear to the hinges and spines, previous owner pencil inscription on blank page),7 x 4 1/4 in. Provenance: Gifted by Alfred Bowditch (1855-1918) to his daughter Mary Orne Bowditch (1883-1971),then by descent to the consignor. An artist and sculptor with several works in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, "Orne" grew up on Moss Hill, a 200-acre plot in Jamaica Plain purchased by her grandfather in the mid-19th century. Her great-grandfather was the noted mathematician Nathaniel Bowditch (1773 -1838),often credited as the founder of modern maritime navigation and author of The New American Practical Navigator, first published in 1802, and still carried on board every commissioned U.S. Naval vessel.
