Two Bound Volumes of Autographs Collected by Major John S. Schultze, 1864. Approximately 400 signatures inscribed on cards, compiled in two volumes quarter bound respectively in red and black leather, with gilt spine decoration and gilt stamped on front and back covers, inscription on ffep reads "These autographs were compiled by Major John S. Schultze, Adjutant General of the Dept. of the Susquehanna for the fair at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, in aid of the U. S. Christian Commission, May, 1864," majority of the signatures are made up of Civil War military figures including Lincoln, Grant, Seward, Hamlin, McClellan, Sheridan, and Sherman and John Basil Turchin (Ivan Vasiloveitch Turchinoff),a Russian-born officer who emigrated to America in 1856, other notable autographs include Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Ralph Waldo Emerson, George Washington Cable, Chester A. Arthur, James Garfield Franklin Pierce, and Millard Filmore, the volumes also contain numerous letters numerous union and confederate soldier letters including a General A.P. Hill autograph letter signed to Major General Darius Couch, undated, offering "Many thanks, my dear Couch, for the cigars; they were like the memory of days past, pleasant and mournful," (volume in black leather has been rebound with the original spine laid down, red leather volume with chipping to the corners of the front and back covers, chipping at head and tail of spine, and front board slightly detached from spine),more detailed list of contents available upon request, 11 x 7 1/2 in. Provenance: Goodspeed's, Boston, Massachusetts, 1941.
