Lincoln Ripley Stone, Surgeon to the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, 1863 Civil War Diary and Related Items. The diary bound in black leather with G.M. Whipple & A.A. Smith, Boston, Bookseller's label in the front recording, mostly pencil, daily activities, movements, and observations of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment during the 1863 campaign season; entries begin in late May continuing through the end of the year, entries in mid-July concern the attack on Battery Wagner on Morris Island including noting the death of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, five pages listing wounds and deaths in the company on July 16, 1863, and lists of expense incurred while on campaign; with two drafts of Lincoln Ripley Stone's recollections of the 1861 and 1862 campaigns and an albumen photograph of Lincoln Ripley Stone seated on a porch surrounded by several people including African American women. Provenance: The Charles Foster Batchelder III estate, upstate New York, formerly of Natick, Massachusetts. Note: The 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment was composed of free black soldiers and achieved fame through the bravery exhibited by its men at the attack on Battery Wagner on the night of July 18, 1863, suffering casualties of over 40% of the men in the process.
