Paul Evans (1931-1987) for Directional Cityscape Etagere, United States, c. 1975, from the PE 200 Series, Model No. PE 249, chrome, topaz glass, with five glass shelves, signed, "An Original Paul Evans " ht. 90, wd. 37, dp. 10 in. Note: Evans was an American furniture designer and sculptor known for his unique tables and cabinets. Born in 1920, Evans studied at the Philadelphia Textile Institute, the Rochester Institute of Technology, and Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. After school, Evans shared a workshop and showroom with his mentor, Phillip Lloyd Powell in New Hope, Pennsylvania. In 1964, Evans became a designer for Directional Furniture, and introduced several furniture lines, including his popular "Cityscapes" series. At Directional, Evans became one of the few designer-makers to successfully bridge the gap between studio and commercial furniture production. In 1981, Evans left Directional Furniture and opened his own showroom in New York.
